I thought it was a good idea to start off 2007 by doing something new, something I didn't think I would or could do — just to prove that I could do something I didn't think I would or could.

So tonight, for the first time in my life... I ate sushi. A maki roll, to be specific, or so [personal profile] rintrahroars tells me.

And much to my continuing surprise, I DIDN'T DIE.

Even more bewildering, it actually wasn't too bad. I had more of a problem with the giant stick of carrot in the maki roll than I did from the slab of raw tuna. I did have a bit of a psychological block when I started eating the roll, I think — "Dude, don't you even think about swallowing that thing," the part of my brain that keeps me safe by not letting me try new things told my mouth, but I just kept chewing and got it down. And I didn't collapse into a frothing, convulsing heap onto the table, which I was pretty damn convinced I was going to do.

I don't think I'm quite ready to become a sushi-eatin' fiend just yet, but I haven't ruled out the possibility of trying it again someday, and that's not nothin'. Even a little progress is still progress, right?

If the fish are what squick you, I highly recommend veggie sushi, which has all the tasty and none of the fishy. I find cucumber the easiest, because I have Issues (TM) with mush, but avocado is also tasty if you like that kind of thing.

You can also make sushi rice at home and just eat it with veggies, which is also totally tasty.

I have those Issues(tm) too, especially with avocado. Blech. I can't deal with the texture or the taste.

I can actually eat avocado in sushi, but only a couple of pieces in a row. And I can eat guacamole, if the lumps are mashed out, which is awesome, as it is tasty.

Fish kinda squick me 'cause I'm allergic to shellfish — while I'm not allergic to other fish, that allergy pretty much turns me off of most seafood. The sushi we had was made by our Temporary Houseboy Jeff, and he also made me some "steak sushi," which I had as a warmup to trying the tuna. The steak sushi was yummy enough that I think veggie sushi would probably work for me, too. I'm not huge into cucumber, but I think the avocado was my favorite part of the rolls I had.

Maybe now someday I'll be able to better enjoy going to Minado with you guys! Provided I'm ever, y'know, back in the area... *sigh*

Go you! We are so PROUD! ;-)

I must agree with DWG about veggie sushi. I don't eat the fishy stuff and have no feelings of regret or deprivation.

Yeah, I think veggie sushi is definitely the way to go for me in the future. I will also not feel a lack if I don't have fish, though it'll be nice to possibly go have sushi with people and not have to just get teriyaki chicken! Good think I've gotten to where I'll actually eat veggies (which I wouldn't during my young, pre-[livejournal.com profile] rintrahroars days). :)
